Why does peppermint essential oil make my skin feel cool?
Peppermint essential oil makes your skin feel cool because the natural menthol in peppermint oil overstimulates the cold receptors in your skin, tricking your brain into thinking your skin is cold. This makes peppermint soap a great choice for summertime, after workout, or any time you want to feel cool and refreshed.

What is the big deal about activated charcoal and why is it a good idea in soap?
Ok, here's the deal. Activated charcoal adsorbs organic toxins. The surface of activated charcoal molecules is super porous, full of nooks and crannies. But it doesn't just soak up toxins. It has a large surface area for it's size because of all the nooks and crannies, and that entire surface is negatively charged. Positively charged organic toxins stick to activated charcoal like a magnet. They can then be safely flushed out. This is why emergency rooms will have a patient who has swallowed certain poisons eat activated charcoal. In this way, they can bind (not soak up), the poison to keep it from reacting in the body so that it can be safely flushed out. Similarly, any positively charged stains, nasty chemical dirtiness, or other ickies that get trapped in your skin can be safely and gently removed using activated charcoal soap, face masks, etc...Soap is a natural surfectant, or a substance that reduces the surface tension of the substance in which it is dissolved. This is why soap is able to help water clean better than water can by itself. Picture a glass of water as you pull your finger slowly out of it. It's kind of "sticky" right? it sticks to your finger and tries to resist you pulling away from the surface. That is what surface tension is. When soap is added to water this force is reduced, so water can get into all the places it needs to clean, which, in the case of this soap, helps the activated charcoal to do its job of pulling out the toxins!

OK, but why would you put peppermint essential oil in this soap? What so special about this stuff?
There is much to be said about Peppermint essential oil. I need to put together a blog post about it. for now, I'll say that besides Lavender and Eucalyptus it is one of the three most versatile and widely used essential oils. Peppermint has proven pain relieving, headache relieving, sinus decongestant, calming, antibacterial, and many other amazing abilities. This soap, because it is a concentrated activated charcoal soap with about 30% coconut oil base, is a deep cleaning body bar. Coconut oil in the base creates lots of deep cleaning bubbles in the finished soap. We chose peppermint oil to finish the soap because we thought it would be great in situations where a person would really want to feel clean and refreshed, like after a workout, or even after a full day of work when you just want to totally wash the day away. Between charcoal and peppermint we thought we could definitely craft a soap that would thoroughly clean the pores and transport the mind. Peppermint essential oil is not suitable for small children and babies. Please keep this soap out of reach of any children under 6 years old.
